Iron Furnace
& Charcoal Fuel
Charles Read of
Burlington, constructed the Iron Furnace at Batsto in 1766. The furnace
produced cannon as well as munitions and other items to aid the patriots
during their struggle with the British. During years that followed, the
Batsto furnace producing a variety of items such as pots, kettles, stoves,
and fireplace backing. The furnace buildings no longer exist today.
Charcoal was used as fuel for the furnace.
