The Joseph J. Truncer Library:
The Batsto Village Library was started in the early days of the
Batsto Citizens Committee. As early as 1966 the library subcommittee chairman
was Henry Bisbee. The author William MacMahon was also a member of this
committee. The Village was a natural place for collecting books relating to
South Jersey history, iron making, glass
production, and the Pine Barrens.
The library was under the direction of Beatrice Stuckert for
many years with plans to eventually be open to researchers. The library was
renamed in 1974 to honor Mr. Joseph Truncer for his invaluable assistance to the
committee and to Batsto while he held various positions in the NJ Department of
Environmental Protection.
Today’s library and archives vault are part of the Visitors
Center expansion that occurred in the early 1980’s. The library contents are
available, by appointment, to researchers.
